From 21 to 23 November the 16th UNESCO-APEID International Conference “The Heart of Education: Learning to Live Together” was organised in Bangkok, Thailand.

A delegation of 7 members of the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and 2 staff members of VVOB Cambodia joined this conference. The MoEYS delegates are officials of the Quality Assurance Department, Primary Education Department, General Secondary Education Department and the Curriculum Development Department.

The conference facilitated in discussions on leading-edge thinking about learning, reflect on the linkages between learning and social development, explore approaches and tools to enhance learning, and identify enabling policies and instruments to promote learning to live together.

“Learning To Live Together” can be seen in many different ways as was addresses in a variety of sessions. Examples of main topics are:

  • How to create a school where the focus on learning social behaviour is just as important or even more important than gaining content knowledge (Bamboo school Thailand, Human needs based curriculum in a school in the USA, Education for the heart India)
  • Education in conflict areas
  • Learning to be a global citizen in an ever faster developing world with access to media and social media
  • Building communities through strategic collaboration between public private and social sectors
  • Environmental Education
  • The importance of life skills education both soft and hard skills

Participants thought the conference to be useful and they intend to use, apply and share the gathered information.

Community of Practice

An additional aim for joining this conference was for participants from VVOB Vietnam and VVOB Cambodia to have an opportunity to meet and share experiences between education systems in Cambodia and Vietnam and discus differences and similarities in programme activities.

On Friday morning 23 November participants split up in three groups and shared information between the two countries in a more formal way whereas during breaks people also took the opportunity for informal meetings.
VVOB Vietnam and Cambodia prepared a conference session on capacity building in both VVOB countries. On behalf of VVOB, Ms. Thy Tran did the presentation which was joined by members of both VVOB countries.
