VVOB supported education in Kenya from 1988 until 2013, and renewed its commitment in 2021.

To ensure the education system equips learners with 21st Century skills, Kenya put forward an ambitious competence-based curriculum (CBC) reform in 2016. The Kenya Ministry of Education has conducted teacher training to support the rollout of the new curriculum, however, there is need to enhance the capacity of school leaders to effectively lead the change process.

To address this need, VVOB has partnered with the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) to develop and implement an app-based blended learning trajectory for school leaders through the ‘INCREASE’ programme (2022-2026). ‘INCREASE’ - Implementing National Curriculum Reforms through App-based learning for school leaders in Secondary Education, aims at equipping school leaders with strong instructional leadership skills to effectively support teachers and the school community in the implementation of the CBC.

Current focus:

VVOB in Kenya commenced its operations in February 2022.
Currently, our focus is on:

  • Primary Education
  • General Secondary Education
  • Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

Our key areas of work include:

  • School leadership development: implementing a continuous professional development diploma and app-based blended learning trajectory for school leaders
  • Blended learning: combining learning modalities - in-person and online (app-based training with built-in feedback loops) - to enable flexibility for school leaders to effectively achieve their learning outcomes

VVOB has been supporting education in Ecuador since 1987.

Students in secondary technical education constitute a relatively vulnerable group within the Ecuadorian education system. As many need to start generating an income for their families, they value their education as a pathway to employment. But an extra effort is needed to ensure that the education offered to them is properly aligned with the world of work. VVOB also invests in measures to prevent early school leaving among this group of adolescents, focusing specifically on the needs of pregnant and parenting students and on preventing and addressing violent conflict in and around schools.

Current focus:

  • Secondary technical and vocational education and training (TVET)

Our key areas of work include:

  • Continuous professional development of teachers – Supporting universities in the development and delivery of an MA in TVET pedagogy, which will be offered – as a priority – to technical teachers without pedagogical credentials; setting up collaboration with employers for technical upskilling of in-service TVET teachers; and strengthening student counselors so that they can support teachers to prevent and address violent conflict in and around schools.
  • School leadership development – Establishing and coaching communities of practice of school leaders to enhance instructional leadership; improving school leaders’ access to data about the quality of training provided through a tracer study system; strengthening school leaders’ capacity to collaborate with the private sector and negotiate quality internship opportunities for students.
  • Enabling environment – Strengthening the policy and regulatory environment for secondary technical education, with special focus on alignment with the world of work and on gender mainstreaming.
