23/07/2012

Isinya district which is implementing the Healthy Learning  Programme (HLP) held an education day on 6th July 2012. The annual event recognized schools that had excelled academically and in extracurricular activities such as drama, sport and music in the district in 2011.

Mr. Nur Guleid, head of the school meals unit - VVOB’s operational partner at the Ministry of Education, was the chief guest.  He was accompanied by staff from VVOB to the daylong event hosted by Enkasiti Primary School, the best school in 2011 in the district. Other distinguished guests included the District Commissioner, the County Director of Education and the District Education Officer.

As part of the entertainment, Ms. Freida Awour confidently took the stage and animatedly recited a poem on the dangers of drug abuse by young people. Participants were awed by her performance and appreciated her with a long, loud round of applause. Freida is a student at Athi River (G.K. Prison) Primary school, Isinya, one of the HL adopted schools in Isinya District. She was awarded by the HL champion school, Isinya Primary for her recital.

Though a small district, Isinya has made huge achievements as being the best district nationally in 2011 both academically and recreationally. The district has also maintained a mean score of above 450 marks since 2009 nationally. This score has continued to increase over the years. The district has achieved this through unification of stakeholders to achieve the goals of the district. However, the district faces low enrollment of the boy child and lack of school meals programmes in more schools in the district. Only 12 public primary schools out of a total 29 are in the government supported school meals programme.

Isinya Primary School was recognized for being the second best and the most improved school in the district in 2011.
