Capacity development for Free State District Teacher Development Centre Managers

Teachers are key in improving learner performance. Quality professional development for teachers is paramount to improve learner performance and quality education, and a central element to this is the coordination and alignment as well as monitoring of those teacher development opportunities.

To better coordinate, implement and monitor all teacher development initiatives in their districts, DTDC managers and their supervisors, the CES: Education, Management and Support, engaged in a capacity development process. This process consists of different components:

  • a study visit to the Western Cape Provincial Education Department, which took place in the beginning of May this year (read more here),
  • a training on monitoring and evaluation skills for PLCs (end of May this year (read more here),
  • and two workshops addressing specific, identified needs. The first of which we report on here. To facilitate this workshop Billion Child Foundation was engaged by VVOB.

During this workshop, which took place from 28 to 30 June 2016 in Kroonstad, participants focused on the following:

  • Shaping the direction and development of the DTDC
  • Development of self and others
  • Financial management

Participants engaged in exercises on goal setting and strategic prioritising, while acknowledging issues that divert attention and hence negatively impact on efficiency. They practiced delegation, monthly performance agreements and interpersonal communication skills. They explored different social styles, helping them to understand the dynamics between staff at their centres. Lastly, they focused on financial management and engaged in budget exercises.

Throughout the workshop, participants identified lessons learned that can be directly implemented in their workplace. They left the workshop with a personal implementation plan on which they will report during the second workshop.
