DOETs of 5 provinces and VVOB agreed to focus on three ATL topics in 2012: Problem-based learning, LSS Principals with the Evaluation of Students’ performance, and Improving the Links among Family, School and Society.

From April 27 to April 29, 2012, VVOB Vietnam organized a TOT workshop on Problem-based learning in Quang Ngai with the participation of 39 members of the core groups from the five DOETs. The workshop aims at:

  • Introducing the PBL training manual to the core group from DOETs;
  • Discussing with the core group the plan and related issues for follow-up multiplication workshops;
  • And as an additional issue: Introducing the outline of the manual Lower Secondary School Principals with the Evaluation of Students’ Performance.

Problem-based learning is one of several active teaching methods promoted by VVOB. A PBL manual was developed in 2010 by a group of three experts from Hanoi National University of Education, Dr. Nguyen Van Khoi, Dr. Le Huy Hoang and MA Vu Thi Mai Anh. This manual addresses the method in-depth with different levels of application by the teachers. The highest level is that students indentify and solve problems by themselves, with teachers encouraging students to be active and proactive in their learning process. Previously, the manual was introduced to the core group from TTIs and the core trainers multiplied this to lecturers and students at the TTIs in 2010-2011.

After this TOT workshop the five DOETs will organize multiplication workshops for all the teachers in five provinces: a contribution to the change process to active teaching and learning in these provinces.
