On the 15th of April 2014, the National University of Education of Ecuador (UNAE) was inaugurated, with a first course starting. The event was attended by the president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, the Education Minister, Augusto Espinoza, the Minister of Human Resources and Knowledge and other authorities.

During the opening event, the Minister of Education, also signed Memoranda of Understanding with national universities and with the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.

Within the 2014-2016 TVET programme, the design of a specialisation course for teachers in technical education is planned at UNAE, alongside the construction of various continuing training courses that focus on the needs of several actors in technical schools (courses for teachers, managers, auditors, advisers and mentors).

The National University of Education pursues the following strategic objectives:
  • To train teachers with attitudes, values and commitment to education in the country and with disciplinary and pedagogical competences necessary to ensure the formation of conscious citizens who are able to contribute to national development of knowledge.
  • To generate training opportunities for actors in the education system with strategic vision and management skills in their area of speciality.
  • To develop educational research in order to generate knowledge and to meet the needs of the society and the Ecuadorian education system.
  • To develop critical analysis and proposals on education policies by generating spaces with all the actors involved in education.
  • To contribute to national development through innovative and participatory educational projects.
  • To promote the training of teachers in terms of multiculturalism and inclusion, guided by respect for cultural diversity.
  • Being the fundamental support for a national quality education system.
