From January 2020 to December 2021, VVOB partnered with the South African Department of Basic Education and the South African Council for Educators (SACE) in a pilot project on gender-responsive pedagogy for early childhood education (GRP4ECE). The partners developed a practical toolkit for teachers and school leaders, meant to provide them with the necessary competences to create and promote gender-responsive pedagogy in play-based teaching and learning environments.

Through evidence-based research, the effectiveness of the GRP4ECE-project was evaluated. This extended abstract summarises the key findings in the following areas:

  1. Changes in knowledge and attitudes of teachers and school leaders
  2. Changes in school and classroom practices
  3. Changes in children's gender normative behaviour

Based on conclusions drawn from this research and testing the effectiveness of the GRP4ECE model, 10 recommendations are suggested.
