At the request of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), VVOB and UNICEF joined forces in Cambodia during a training course on Child Friendly Schools (CFS), which was held at the Teacher Training Centre of Siem Reap from 28 September to 3 October. The focus of the training was on Effective Teaching and Learning strategies in primary schools, a key component of the CFS policy.

Over the past 5 years VVOB strengthened the capacity of teacher trainers at the colleges of Kampong Cham and Siem Reap. These teacher trainers now played a key role in the development and delivery of a training on teaching methodology organised by the Primary Education Department of MoEYS and UNICEF. In this way, VVOB was able to mainstream the knowledge, skills and materials that were developed during the Learner Centred Methodology and Open Resource Centre projects.

The target group of the 6-day training course was a group of core trainers from MoEYS who are responsible for the implementation of the CFS programme in all Cambodian primary schools through a cascade system. In the next stage, the capacity will be transferred to district education officers as well as school principals and ultimately to primary school teachers. The participants and observers of MoEYS and UNICEF highly appreciated the expertise as well as training materials that were provided with the assistance of VVOB. Moreover, this successful cooperation will surely continue as VVOB is asked to be involved during future training programmes and to review the CFS training manuals. To be continued.
