Mapping of agricultural value chain opportunities at a secondary school in...

Laatste keer bijgewerkt op 13/11/2023
Stage in Uganda voor Universiteitstudenten
Stagejaar: 2024

The internship focuses on mapping out the entrepreneurial environments that one O-level and one community polytechnic school in Gulu are operating in, including the mapping of agricultural companies surrounding the wider school areas and the identification of major value chains with special attention for those offering the best opportunities for learning purposes in collaboration with the school and agripreneur. Depending on the specialisation of the intern this mapping exercise can result in a business model canvas for an enterprise that students or the school can run to learn relevant agriculture and entrepreneurship skills. Alternatively, it can result in a short module or training on agripreneurship for teachers to develop students’ skills in key innovations to succeed in the local environment; or a study and career guidance tool that informs students about the career options along the agriculture value chain

Stage in Uganda voor Hogeschoolstudenten, Universiteitstudenten
Stagejaar: 2023, 2024

In this research assignment  you will develop a recommended profile for role models who can offer career talks in secondary education and/or TVET – not only to interest young people in studies and careers in agriculture but especially for gender non-stereotypical and environmentally sustainable/friendly agri-businesses.

Possible research questions are:

  • What does evidence suggest about the characteristics and qualities of role models in relation to motivation and aspirations of young people regarding their study and career choices (within agri-preneurship education)?
  • What are young people’s perceptions about qualities and characteristics of role models? Who have been the role models who inspired young agri-preneurs to get engaged in gender non-stereotypical and/or green agri-enterprises?
  • What profile should teachers and instructors use to identify local volunteers who can act as role models to inspire/motivate young people into agri-preneurship and especially green and gender non-stereotypical agri-work opportunities? What are the existing platforms and networks in which potential role models can be identified/contacted?
  • How can teachers best attract possible role models who fit the profile to engage in agriculture/entrepreneurship education? What are the role models considerations in volunteering their time and effort?
  • How can educators, policy makers and researchers further improve the utilisation of role models in secondary education and TVET towards green study and career trajectories whilst combatting gender barriers?
